<p>I often awaken violently at night, typically confused about whether I am awake or dreaming. Sometimes I remember these episodes and sometimes I don't. I have always had problems sleeping but am worried because these episodes have been happening with greater frequency. My wife says it is quite scary and is afraid I'm either going to give myself a heart attack or her. Besides the safety issue, I worry that I am causing her to have such disruptive sleep now as well. What is going on and is this something that can be treated without medication? I am a thin, active male, 34, almost 35 years old who has had various sleep problems since I was a child- insomnia and night terrors mostly.

<p>If you have health insurance, get a complete sleep study done.  These things are expensive, but well worth it because they can often pin-point the problem and provide solutions for it.  I know this is kind of depressing, but perhaps if you have a spare bed in your home, you and your wife should sleep seperately for a while until it is resolved.  Talk to her about it!</p>

<b>How do you handle pressure at work? Do you get insomnia?</b><br />

<p>I work in a very very stressful busy job with pressures to meet weekly and monthly targets. Sometimes I cant sleep - and end up getting 2 hours sleep a night. Then the weekend comes and I cant relax or stop thinking about work - even if i watch a DVD my mind keeps wondering and drifting about worry over work.</p>
<p>How would you handle this?

<p>Depends on what the work is, but there are general tools you can use in the office.</p>
<p>If things do get stressful, do the following:<br />
Find your priorities - there's a saying only 20% of your work adds 80% of the value ot your career or company. the other 80% is menial labour. By finding out what our priorities are, you can focus your tasks that fit the bill as some sort of worst case scenario.</p>
<p>Look for ways of doing things more efficiently - this doesn't mean not doing the work properly or looking for quick ways out of things but it means cutting through things that do not need to be done which can cut down time and save effort for other things. e.g. if you had to go leaflet a street of houses, you can go by their house number i.e. leaflet number 1, then 2, then 3, etc. However, you can also do it by one side of the street, then the next e.g. 1, then 3, then 5, etc. The latter saves more time and energy.<br />
Things in this department should be systematic, so you would have to think of the work like a system (if it's applicable in your line of work). If something is common in all areas of the work, then it pays to look at those things systematically. e.g. if you're a painter and you know you need red, blue, yellow, white and black paint for every painting, it pays to have excess supply of those paint instead of going out to buy some for each painting you do. We have all done things that would have wasted time or effort without knowing it such as talking on the phone to our colleagues too long about their personal lives or making unnecessary trips in and out of the office because you keep on needing information from other departments. Thinking in this sort of way means you have to think of things in their essentials/modules.</p>
<p>Timetable/diary- (I'm sure you've already looked at this, but it pays to be sure.) Get a diary and plan your week. Tick off the things you have done.</p>
<p>Spend 5 minutes a day (before work) to plan the day ahead - being organised for the day saves more time and effort than going through the day not knowing what you are supposed to be doing</p>
<p>Have a 'to do list' - one of the most basic means of organisation. it's pretty effective and is widely used, although more sophisticated tools are out there.</p>
<p>Cut things down to the essential - we have spent days on end making things longer than it needs to be. To file a report, we need to print off the file, chat to our colleagues over something irrelevant whilst doing nothing else, walk down the stairs, bypass several security doors, find the revelant section in the filing room and dump it on top of piles of paperwork. It's essentially printing it off and then putting on top of the paperwork. If that's the case wouldn't it be better if there was a printer in the filing room and you told the part-time clerk there to file it for you. That alone should save you 3-4 minutes in work that would have taken 6 minutes otherwise. It would even be better if things were done elctronically e.g. using computer databases or computer folders for documentation.<br />
You may need to note that some things need you to be in person, so some things can't be cut down to their essentails. e.g. meeting a client to talk about a major deal on a property or dealing with a major complaint from an unsatisfied customer.</p>
<p>Delegation - it's something you can take advantage of if you have subordinates. Do only delegate work that is not core to your role, otherwise it's asking other people to do your work for you i.e. the 80% that adds only 20% value to your company or your career.<br />
Even if you are not a manager, you can delegate repetitive and systematic work to assiatants in a third world country via telecommunication, provided you have done it properly. Of course, delegating it to a company to do will mean you have to pay them money even if it's something like $2-3 a hour for an hour's work. I do recommend you looking up advice on this prior to doing so. I also recommend you read Tim Ferris' '4 hour work week' for a better insight.</p>
<p>Master the 'trance' - as work become burdensome and tiring, it pays to master a psychological mindset that might help you work to a mindset. We all have done it subconsciously before where our minds is somewhere else whilst our physcial bodies are still working their arse off. Time will seem quicker, you don't need to concentrate as hard, work seems like second nature, work is done more and things don't seem as hard or tiring as they used to.<br />
Mastering this mindset requires you knowing the system of your work and let your mind go free whilst you do your work. It's great for menial work, but I don't recommend it for important things or the 20% that would affect your career or your company's prosperity. I recommend pratising on housework e.g. washing dishes, sweeping floors. At the same time, let your body focus on the work, but let your concentration drift. It's almost like shutting the world off around you and just focusing on the work you are d</p>

<p>This book gave me the creeps.  It drags from time to time as I find that King tends to do a lot, but its worth the read.  I can't really tell you much about it because I don't want to spoil it and I simply suck at giving good descriptive reviews.  So I'll just say this... the book is great.  Definitely give it another go.</p>

<p>Hello fellow moms just a quick question here. Did any of you suffer from insomnia in late pregnancy? I'm 30 weeks pregnant and I cannot sleep to save my life. I am tired as all get out but I cannot get comfortable. As soon as I get comfortable I have to pee, then after I pee I'm thirsty, and then I need a snack etc. It also feels like my brain refuses to shut down. I am constantly thinking of a million different things at once. I cannot continue to sleep only 3-4 hours a night because I go to school and work full time as well. I am at my wits end! Do you guys have any suggestions for this? Thanks for the input.<br />
EDIT: If I drank warm milk I'd puke everywhere, I hate milk! I have a pregnancy pillow but I also have arthritis and two discs out of place so this extra weight makes every position uncomfortable. I will try sleeping in the recliner tonight though, that sounds comfy =)

Then you spend all day tired.. I have no cure for you but you sure have my sympathy!<br />
    * Be sure to avoid caffeine late in the day<br />
    * Use a body pillow for nighttime comfort<br />
    * Try a cup of milk (an old wives' tale yes but it can work!)<br />
    * Eat foods that contain tryptophan, magnesium and/or melatonin (all known to induce sleep), examples include potatoes, turkey, almonds, oatmeal, cheese, fish, eggs, honey and bananas<br />
    * Some mothers sleep better upright (as in using a recliner)<br />
    * Try using a warm rice sock or hot water bottle (or an ice pack) for back or hip pains</p>
<p>Oh and if you have a clock pointed at the bed.. move it! staring at the clock just pisses me off when I can't sleep and I stay awake thinking about how little sleep I'm getting! lol</p>

<p>I am moderately active.  I have two kids, so I chase the small one around.  I eat healthier than most with some junk food.  I do not have any major health issues.  However: I tend to think too much at night and can't stop.  I used to worry a lot, but I managed to relax, but now I just think about random stuff and cannot fall asleep.  Sometimes it is the to do list for the next day while other times it is silly stuff like what color sheets to buy next pay check or what my dream home would look like.

<p>Okay, this is something I read from an Indian Dr. and it does actually work, and it is easy to do.. only two steps.  When you lay down, announce to yourself (out loud or in your mind) "I am sleeping"  Then after your little announcement, just picture in your mind a black clear night sky filled with stars and allow your senses to feel pulled forward into it.  If your mind goes to worries or in any way wanders, say in your mind "Be quiet, I am sleeping".  And return to the starfield.  Amazing stuff... you'll be asleep in no time and really great dreams too.</p>

<p>i know what you're going through.  a lot of times at night i am "tired" and want to go to sleep, but i'm not "sleepy" if you catch the difference.  </p>
<p>this is especially true when i travel.  as for the reason, i believe it is simply being in an unfamiliar environment which causes you to subconsciously not feel safe or comfortable enough to got to seep easily.  it could also be that you are in a different time zone (same as jet lag) and it takes a few days for your body to reacclimate to the difference as sunlight plays a vital role in telling your body when it is supposed to feel sleepy.</p>
<p>my mother is a pharmacist and told me to use melatonin supplements any time i need to regulate my sleeping patterns, and it WORKS.  melatonin is a substance produced by all lving creatures that regulates their daily sleep-wake cycles.  in laymen's terms, melatonin is what is responsible for making you feel sleepy...you take the supplement, you feel sleepy, you sleep...period.  </p>
<p>you don't need to use it daily like some meds, so dependence is not a factor.  just take the recommended dose about a half hour before you want to go to sleep whenever you're having trouble getting to sleep be it from travel or the change in sleep patterns from weekend to work week, or stress.  i often have to take some the night before an exam because i'm so stressed out i can't sleep.  </p>
<p>you can also take it a couple nights in a row at the same time of night.  doing this will change your sleep cycle so that your body feels sleepy around the same time you've been taking the melatonin the previous nights.  so you can use it to simply go to sleep one night when you prefer to, or you can use it a couple days in a row to more quickly develop new sleeping patterns that your body will get used to on its own.</p>
<p>it's non-prescription and found in the supplements/vitamins section.  it will work and it's safe.  it doesn't interact with anything else (your own body produces it after all).  ask a pharmacist about it...surely there's a Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, or Eckerds or something wherever you're vacationing.</p>

<p>You're pretty young, I'd suggest talking to a parent and visit your doctor to find the root of your issue.</p>
<p>Try to correct it now so that it will not affect the rest of your life if that's possible!</p>
<p>Try to relax and shut your mind off, that is the main problem I have when I can't sleep, I'm thinking too much. One other thing can be if you nap at all during the day, fight it and you should have a better chance to sleep at night!</p>
